August 30th 2008 Doumbek-My new favorite drum
I had played percussion in school since the tender age of thirteen but hadn’t heard about the doumbek until a few years ago.It is a funny shaped drum that is played in odd time signatures. Even the best players in my drumline have trouble keeping with the folkdance-style rhythms of this stunning Middle Eastern instrument. The name seems tough to pronounce but the doumbek is played throughout many cultures such as African, Greek, Russian and more, which we learned from our drum coach. It is an excellent addition to our percussion family, I love learning about other cultures, especially when learning about them is so musical and fun!
