September first signifies the changeover of number plates form 08 to 58. 08 was introduced on March 1st 2008 and runs to 31st August 2008. The twice yearly format commenced in 1999 and used up the last of the prefix numbers, then in September 2001 the system changed over to the current system where the age of the vehicle is signified is denoted by the 3rd and 4th digit of the registration number. The twice yearly format replaced the once yearly arrangement which occurred on August 1st and caused a “hump” in car sales, the new system is supposed to spread sales more through the year.
